David Wingo has been the soundtrack to Southern lives for years- literally. As the composer behind the scores for David Gordon Green’s films (George Washington, All the Real Girls), Wingo framed the onscreen images with beautiful, complementary arrangements, hitting all the right emotional notes. This background in scoring shines through in his solo project, Ola Podrida. To describe this music as cinematic is an understatement.
Ola Podrida's self-titled debut album is being released by Plug Research in the spring of 2007.
"David Wingo's songs at first seem modest and merely warm - lullabyes, irons & wines. But what I've found is that the songs are hot. Behind all that lull is organ churn, guitar resound, sharp want and skin-on-skin...The folksy calm lets the songs feel easy, lets them feel familiar; and yet deep in there, beneath the easy and familiar songs, is something more than status quo...If this were a 2006 album, it would be one of my albums of the year." - SAID THE GRAMOPHONE
"They do a great job of capturing the feelings that characterize the impossibly wide expanse that is our state. This is "Texas Music", in the best sense of the phrase...My first favorite of 2007" - GORILLA VS. BEAR
"The new record is truly outstanding, a debut full of promise and beauty, the kind of thing you'll want to listen to over and over again...If there's any justice in the musical world, you'll be hearing a lot more of Ola Podrida in the year to come." - EVERYBODY CARES, EVERYBODY UNDERSTANDS
